This is the last episode before DevLearn. The eLearning Guild’s annual conference is the premiere event in the elearning industry bar none!
There’s a couple of added notes to this whole experiment I started back in early August. First, I joined the xAPI cohort to add functionality to this little game/puzzle so when eventually published a leaderboard will be added so folks from around the world can see how they compare. Second, I submitted this project to DevLearn’s DemoFest. Whoohoo! DemoFest is an evening where vendors, non-vendors, and student show their projects they’ve been working on or completed. There’s also a chance to win through peer voting. I have zero expectations other than sharing what “working out loud” actually looks like.
The goal now is to complete 5-ring game play in time for DevLearn. LOTS of work to do to get things ready.
First, this episode explains how 5-ring game play had to be broken out into several slides to accommodate the number of layers needed to this level. To give you an example, 4-ring game play includes 86 layers! There’s a little bit…okay, a lot of latency with the click and drag of the ring objects. With 5-ring game play there will be well over 100 layers! THAT is too many for a good user experience. So…
The strategy is to split out the Tower win paths. Meaning, a starter slide that depending on if Ring 1 is moved to Tower B or Tower C, it will jump to a respective slide. That first slide will hold all the layers for winning on Tower B and another slide with all the layers for winning on Tower C. Plus, a couple other slides to hold all the alternate layers outside of a success path. The challenge is to be careful to also ensure any cross path plays will know which slide and which layer to show. Wowzers!
In other words there’s a lot of busy work yet to do. Once I get every level working flawlessly, I’ll refocus on making sure all the scoring is functioning properly. After that I still need to return to a couple of ideas that were presented early on including 3 lives and Replay.
Enjoy and I’ll see you all in a couple weeks.
