It’s been September of 2009 since I last posted. That’s terrible! New year, new commitment.
I will say though as of September of 2009, my freelance work picked up quite nicely. Among several projects I got myself into, one was starting a comic strip of my step-daughter Lauren. I call it “The Tween Chronicles.”
It started back during the beginning of this school year. Middle school (or Jr. High). It’s all about boys, fashion, and ‘the’ reputation (rep). She wants so bad to be a preteen, but I must argue that when she’s 12 she can use that tag…until then, she’s a tween. Hence, The Tween Chronicles.
Everyday she would come home from school and it would be new drama in her life. Later at night I would summarize and post on my Facebook page. In a matter of a few days, I had folks eagerly anticipating the next event in the saga of the Tween!
One morning on the way to school, she was telling her mom that she needed a new car… A convertible… In a hot color. When asked why, Lauren matter-of-factly said, “So when you drop me off at school I’ll be stylin’ and profilin!'” We laughed all the way to work that morning! My wife suggested I sketch it out. I did. That was #1. I’m up to #19 (or 19 weeks) and I publish a new one to Facebook every Sunday night. This was this past Sunday’s submission.
She got in trouble for talking during a test. She said she was whispering so as not to disturb the others and was accused of possible cheating. She did well. She got an 88, but consequence was losing ten points, so in the end she got a 78. She’s very social and cannot stand not being involved in every conversation. It didn’t take long to put two and two together: Talking during a test in the 6th grade IS social learning!
The Tween Chronicles is a project in its infancy. Although I draw cartoons daily, I’ve not committed to a comic strip like this before. It’s kinda fun! Who knows…you may see it soon on its own webcomic.
